Meet the Standards Commission Members – Helen Donaldson

Q: Why did you apply to be a member of the Standards Commission?

A: I applied to join the Standards Commission because I have always felt strongly about the importance of high ethical standards in those who seek to make decisions on our behalf. Having worked in various local authority roles, I wanted to make use of my experience to support the work of the Commission in upholding high standards of conduct among councillors and board members.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about the role?

A: What I enjoy most about this role is the opportunity to work collaboratively with a very diverse group of people who bring varied perspectives, experience and expertise to the work of the Commission. It is really rewarding to work with the other Members of the Commission and the Staff team, all of whom share a commitment to supporting and advocating for high standards in public life.

Q: What aspect of the role have you found the most challenging or surprising?

A: One of the most challenging aspects of the role has been addressing the complexity of cases, especially during Hearings, where intent and context are often nuanced. It requires a careful balance of fairness, empathy, and a clear understanding of the Codes.

Q: What would you like to see going forward in terms of the conduct of councillors and board members?

A: Looking ahead, I would like to see greater attention to the principles that underpin the Codes of Conduct from political leaders at all levels. They have the potential to influence, champion and embody The Nolan Principles particularly by demonstrating integrity, openness and respect in their leadership and in their behaviours.

Q: And finally, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A: In my spare time, I enjoy exploring new places, particularly those where there's a rich history. I also find great satisfaction in looking after my garden at home. I find planting, pruning and even weeding very calming and restful. Most of all I enjoy spending time with my energetic and endlessly entertaining grandchildren; throwing balls; splashing stones in water and reading stories bring immense joy and a sense of balance to my life.
